Both are free. Both do invoicing well enough that the feature list is not the deciding factor. The actual decision comes down to two things: what you pay when a client pays you, and how much you trust the company holding your money in transit.
The short answer
Cheaper per payment because you bring your own processor. Better if invoicing is all you need.
You want invoicing and bookkeeping in one place and prefer a simpler interface.

Cost: the only difference that compounds
Wave bundles payment processing and takes 2.9% + $0.60 per card transaction. Zoho takes nothing and hands the payment to your own Stripe or PayPal account, so you pay that processor’s published rate.
In practice the card rates land close to each other. The gap opens on bank transfers and on volume. Wave’s 1% ACH is genuinely good — $20 on a $2,000 invoice against roughly $58 by card. If most of your invoices are large and your clients will pay by bank transfer, Wave’s ACH rate is arguably the single best number in this comparison.
If your clients pay by card and you invoice steadily, Zoho’s structure wins because there is no platform layer taking a cut on top of the processor.
Two things we could not settle
Zoho’s free invoice cap. Sources disagree — some describe 500 invoices per year with 2 users and 3 projects, others describe no artificial limit. We could not verify which applies to new 2026 accounts. If you will exceed 500 invoices a year, confirm directly with Zoho first.
Wave and held funds. User reports circulated in February 2026 describe Wave freezing funds after payments were received. We have not independently verified these reports and cannot say how common the issue is. We are flagging it because anything sitting between you and your income deserves a mention, not because we have concluded it is widespread.
Which should you pick?
Pick Zoho Invoice if…
- You want the lowest cost per payment
- You bill hourly and want time tracking included
- You invoice internationally and need multi-currency
- You already use, or might use, other Zoho products
- You keep your books elsewhere or with an accountant
Pick Wave if…
- You want invoicing and bookkeeping in one place
- Most invoices are large and paid by bank transfer (1% ACH)
- You want the simpler interface and less setup
- You are certain about volume and want no cap ambiguity
- Your cash flow can absorb an occasional payment hold
The honest summary
For most freelancers and consultants, Zoho Invoice is the better default. It costs less per payment, includes time tracking and multi-currency, and does not put a platform between you and your processor.
Wave is the better answer for one specific shape of business: large invoices, bank transfer, and a preference for keeping books in the same tool. Its 1% ACH rate is the best number in this comparison.
Both are free to try, and neither locks you in badly. Before you commit to either, spend five minutes checking the export path — that is the feature you will care about most on the day you want to switch.
